M. Night Shyamalan's "Glass" topped the charts but ended up with less than expected in its opening weekend. Meanwhile "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" provided the weekend's biggest surprise.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
Universal's "Glass" opened with $40.5 million over the weekend, and is expected to bring in $47 million for the four-day holiday weekend. Pundits expected the film to come closer to a $50 million debut, but it's already a great result considering the film only cost $20 million to produce. It's also the fourth largest January opening of all-time and after Monday it could become the third largest Martin Luther King weekend debut of all-time.
As for how it ranks within Shyamalan's secret trilogy, "Glass" pretty much matched and slightly exceeded Split's $40 million debut, while the first film in the series, "Unbreakable" opened with $30.3 million in 2000, which adjusted for inflation becomes $49.6 million today. The trilogy's final chapter also delivered $48.5 million from international markets, which is already ahead of "Split" at this point.
"Glass" received mixed reviews from critics (36 on Rotten Tomatoes and 42 on Metacritic), but a more positive response from moviegoers ("B" grade from CinemaScore).
Last week's #1 film, the dramedy "The Upside" finished in second place with $15.6 million after dropping just 23% in its second weekend. The film is expected to gross $19.5 million over the extended weekend, which would brings its domestic total to $48 million after 11 days.
The biggest surprise came from the animated film "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" which opened with $10.3 million over the weekend, and a total of $21 million since its release on Wednesday. Overseas the film has grossed $65.8 million from 18 countries.
"Aquaman" was pushed back to a fourth place finish with $10.3 million, bringing its domestic tally to $304.3 million, ranking fourth among fellow DC Extended Universe movies. Internationally the film has grossed a total of $759.1 million, for a global total of $1.06 billion, which brings it just $21 million short of surpassing "The Dark Knight Rises" and becoming the highest grossing DC Comics adaptation ever.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Sony's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" with $7.25 million over the weekend after dropping just 19.8%, and is expected to finish the extended weekend with around $9 million. The film has grossed $158.2 million domestically and $164.6 million internationally.
