"The Passion of the Christ" and "Sound of Freedom" star Jim Caviezel is set to star as controversial ex-Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro in a biopic titled "Dark Horse" based on Bolsonaro's successful 2018 campaign for the presidency. The film is directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh ("Sarah's Oil", "The Stoning of Soraya M.") from a script written by former Bolsonaro Culture Secretary Mário Frias, who is also reported to be involved with the production.
The news was shared by Bolsonaro's son Carlos who posted a photo on X of himself with Caviezel in costume as his father. He wrote: "I know your legacy will continue to be admired by good people and envied by those who seek destruction – yet the message you imprint with every step leaves its mark on the world". Filming will continue into 2026, in both Brazil and Mexico.
The film started shooting three months ago and is described as heroic portrait of Bolsonaro, who is currently in prison after receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to overturn the 2022 election results. Authorities said he orchestrated a plot to invalidate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's victory, leading to his imprisonment in September. Bolsonaro was close with Donald Trump, who criticized his arrest and incarceration. A separate ruling has barred Bolsonaro from holding office until 2030, effectively ending his political career.
