Although more of a backstage pass than an actual movie, Taylor Swift's "The Official Release Party of a Showgirl" easily topped the box office charts, while Dwayne Johnson's "The Smashing Machine" tanked with the worst opening in the superstar's entire career. Meanwhile the supernatural horror film "Good Boy", which featured a canine protagonist, scored a modest debut, and "Anemone" starring an out-of-retirement Daniel Day-Lewis failed to make the Top 10.

AMC Theatres' release of "Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl" opened in first place with $34 million from 3,702 theaters. The theatrical event was only in theaters for three days, and had no Thursday previews. Overseas, it raked in another $16 million for a worldwide total of $50 million. The critical reception was mixed (60% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the fans loved it ("A+" CinemaScore).
The darkly comic thriller "One Battle After Another" starring Leonardo DiCaprio dropped to second place, grossing $11 million in its second weekend. The film fell 50%, which is a stronger than expected hold, and its domestic total has now reached $42.6 million. With another $59.5 million from foreign markets, the film's worldwide total is now at $102.1 million, which isn't great considering the film's budget is estimated to be somewhere between $130 and $175 million, meaning it would need at least $300 million to break even.
The biopic "The Smashing Machine", which features an Oscar-hopeful performance by Dwayne Johnson, opened in third place with $6 million from 3,345 theaters, which is the lowest wide opening of Johnson's career, even worse than 2010's "Faster" ($8.5 million debut) and 2019's "Fighting With My Family" ($7.8 million nationwide debut). Making matters worse is the film's $50 million budget, which puts the film firmly in the red. While reviews were generally positive, it wasn't universally loved (72% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the audience reception was lukewarm ("B-" CinemaScore).
"Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie" finished its sophomore weekend in fourth place with $5.3 million, a steep 61.1% decline, despite adding 7 additional theaters. The film has now grossed $21.7 million in North America, and another $11 million overseas for a worldwide total of $32.7 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Warner's "The Conjuring: Last Rites" which is holding very well with $4.1 million and a 38.8% drop in its fifth weekend. The horror flick has now grossed a total of $167.8 million domestically and another $291.4 million internationally, which adds up to $459.2 million worldwide against a $55 million production budget.
IFC's horror film "Good Boy" opened in ninth place with $2.3 million from 1,650 theaters. The film earned solid reviews from critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes), but an unenthusiastic reception from moviegoers ("B" CinemaScore). The film was surpassed by the re-release of James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water", which finished in seventh place with $3.2 million from 2,140 theaters.
In other news, Daniel Day-Lewis' return to acting didn't help his son's debut directorial feature "Anemone", which landed well outside the Top 10 with only $681,655 from 865 theaters.
