Weekend Box Office: ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER Starring Leonardo DiCaprio Flops With $22 Million Debut

Weekend Box Office One Battle After Another

Paul Thomas Anderson's new film "One Battle After Another" starring Leonardo DiCaprio mmanaged to top the box office charts over the weekend, but considering the film's hefty budget, it's not much of a victory at all. "Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie" also didn't impress with a second place debut, while the horror film "The Strangers: Chapter 2" starring Madelaine Petsch failed to find an audience.

Read more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"One Battle After Another" opened in first place with $22 million from 3,634 theaters. This is acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson's first #1 opening and will probably become his highest-grossing film if it overtakes "There Will Be Blood" ($40.2 million). Unfortunately, it's also the director's most expensive movie to date, with a budget that varies between reports. Warner Bros. is saying it's $130 million, but Variety is reporting $175 million. Regardless, anything above $100 million is hard to recoup with such a modest debut. Overseas, the film added another $26.1 million for a worldwide total of $48.1 million. Sadly, the movie needs at least $200 million to break even. Both the critical and audience reception have been stellar (96% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).

Universal's children's movie "Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie" claimed second place with a $13.6 million debut from 3,500 theaters. Internationally it raked in just $5.6 million from 37 countries. The film cost around $32 million to produce, which it might find difficult to recoup. Both critics and moviegoers enjoyed the film (81% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A+" CinemaScore).

The record-breaking anime film "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie - Infinity Castle" finished its third weekend in third place with $7.1 million, down 59% from the previous frame. The film has now grossed an impressive $118.1 million in North America, and $487.2 million internationally, which adds up to $605.4 million worldwide.

In fourth place we find "The Conjuring: Last Rites" with $6.7 million and a 45% decline in its fourth weekend. The film's domestic total has now reached $161.3 million, while overseas it adds another $274.4 million for a global total of $435.7 million against a budget of $55 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Lionsgate's "The Strangers: Chapter 2", which opened with only $5.8 million from 2,690 theaters. That's around half of the $11.8 million debut of Chapter 1 in 2024, and much less than the opening of the 2008 original ($20.9 million) or its 2018 sequel "The Strangers: Prey at Night" ($10.4 million). At least it only cost $8.5 million to produce. Reviews for the film were terrible (18% on Rotten Tomatoes), and moviegoers seem to echo the critical reception ("C-" CinemaScore).

In other news, the Fathom Events re-release of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy (one per day) grossed a total of $2.25 million from 1,485 theaters and finished in ninth place.
