Weekend Box Office: BLACK PHONE 2 Scores $27.3 Million Pre-Halloween Debut

Weekend Box Office Black Phone 2

Universal and Blumhouse's horror sequel "Black Phone 2" easily secured the top position at the box office over the weekend, surpassing expectations for the pre-Halloween frame. Unfortunately, the other newcomers, the fantasy comedy "Good Fortune" starring Seth Rogen, Keanu Reeves and Aziz Ansari, and the historical drama "Truth & Treason" failed to impress.

"Black Phone 2" topped the charts in its first weekend with $27.3 million from 3,411 theaters, which is a small improvement over the first film's $23.6 million debut in 2021. The sequel also grossed 13.7 million from 72 international markets, bringing its worldwide debut to $41 million. The film's production budget is estimated at around $30 million. "Black Phone 2" received a mixed-to-positive reception from both critics (73% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("B" CinemaScore).

Disney's sci-fi sequel "Tron: Ares" imploded with a steep 66.6% drop in its second weekend, finishing in second place with $11.1 million. This brings the film's domestic gross to a disappointing $54.5 million, while overseas it's actually doing worse with only $48.6 million (it launched with only $2.8 million in China). That's a global total of $103.1 million against a $180-220 million budget.

The comedy "Good Fortune" opened in third place with a modest $6.1 million from 2,990 theaters. The film cost $30 million to make, but it looks like it won't be able to recoup. Both the critical and audience reception was mostly positive (78% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B+" CinemaScore).

In fourth place we find "One Battle After Another" with $3.8 million, down 43% in its fourth weekend. The film has now grossed a total of $61.7 million domestically and another $101.3 million internationally. That's a total of $163 million worldwide. Unfortunately, it has been reported that Warner Bros is tracking to lose $100 million on the film, which cost at least $130 million to make, and needed at least $300 million to break even.

The Channing Tatum starrer "Roofman" rounds out the Top 5 with $3.7 million in its second weekend, down 53.9% from its debut. The film has grossed a total of $15.5 million, so far.

In other news, Angel Studios' historical drama "Truth & Treason" opened with only $2.6 million from 2,106 theaters, finishing in sixth place. The film at least received an enthusiastic reception from both critics and audiences (88% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).
