The sci-fi threequel "Tron: Ares" dominated the the box-office but struggled in its first weekend. The big budget blockbuster is another failed attempt to turn the cult classic world of "Tron" into a financially successful franchise. Other new wide releases included the true crime comedy "Roofman" starring Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst, the faith-based drama "Soul on Fire", and the musical "Kiss of the Spider Woman" starring Jennifer Lopez. Niehter film succeeded in attracting moviegoers, while the latter even failed to make the Top 10.

"Tron: Ares" opened in first place with an underwhelming $33.2 million from 4,000 theaters. The original "Tron" opened with $4.7 million in 1982, which adjusted for inflation would amount to $15.9 million today. The first sequel, "Tron: Legacy", raked in $44 million when it opened in 2010, which is around $65.3 million adjusted for inflation. The third installment also grossed $26.7 million internationally from 51 countries ($59.9 million worldwide cume). It opens in China on October 17th. The film was a costly production with a budget estimated at around $180 million, which would mean it needs to gross around $400 million to break even. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (55% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the audience reception was lukewarm ("B+" CinemaScore).
The true story crime comedy "Roofman" opened in second place with $8.1 million from 3,362 theaters. The film cost $17-19 million to produce. Critics generally liked the film (84% on Rotten Tomatoes), and so did audiences ("B+" CinemaScore).
The Leonardo DiCaprio starrer "One Battle After Another" continues to hold well despite a first weekend stumble. It finished its third weekend in third place with $6.8 million, down 38.2% from its sophomore frame. The film has now grossed $54.6 million domestically and another $83.5 million overseas, which adds up to $138.1 million worldwide. Which would be amazing for an arthouse project, but this is a movie that cost $175 million to make, and needs around $300+ million just to recoup its costs.
"Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie" is holding in fourth place with $3.4 million in its third weekend and a soft 35.1% decline. The film's domestic tally has reached $26.5 million, while internationally it adds another $19.8 million for a $46.3 million global total against $32 million in production costs.
Another holdover is "The Conjuring: Last Rites", which rounds out the Top 5 with $3.1 million. The film only dropped 24.7% in its sixth weekend, which is quite impressive. Domestically it grossed a total of $172.6 million, while overseas it raked in $300.9 million. That's a global cume of $473.5 million against a $55 million budget.
The inspirational drama "Soul on Fire" from director Sean McNamara ("Soul Surfer", "Reagan") opened in sixth place with $2.8 million from 1,720 theaters. It's not a great debut, but the people who did see it seemed to like it ("A" CinemaScore).
In other news, Lionsgate's musical "Kiss of the Spider Woman" starring Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna tanked with $891,046 from 1,331 theaters. That's an average of only $669 per theater. At least the critics liked it (77% on Rotten Tomatoes).
