Seven-Emmy winner David Chase ("The Sopranos") is busy developing a new limited series for HBO titled "Project MKUltra", which will chronicle a dark chapter in CIA history. This would mark Chase's first television project since his acclaimed crime drama "The Sopranos".
The miniseries is a dramatic thriller based on the non-fiction book "Project Mind Control: Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA, and the Tragedy of MKUltra" by author John Lisle. Chase has optioned the book and will pen the adaptation which falls under the first-look deal his company Riverain Pictures has at HBO.
The story follows infamous chemist and spymaster Sidney Gottlieb, often known as The Black Sorcerer, who headed the CIA's MKUltra Psychedelic program which conducted dangerous and deadly mind control experiments on willing – and unwilling – subjects during the height of the Cold War. Gottlieb is also known as the unwitting godfather of the entire LSD counterculture.
MKUltra was a covert program Operated by the CIA in the 1950s and ’60s, which sought to counter perceived Soviet and Chinese advances in "brainwashing" techniques by administering psychedelic drugs, practicing hypnosis, and subjecting individuals to torture — often without their knowledge or consent — to elicit confessions.
Chase and Nicole Lambert will executive produce for Riverain Pictures, where Lambert serves as Head of Production and Development. Chase also has an indie movie in the works, which he plans to shoot early next year.
