Creator Ryan Murphy has revealed that the third season of the true crime anthology series "Monster" will focus on Ed Gein, and the infamous serial killer will be played by Charlie Hunnam ("Sons of Anarchy"). Murphy made the surprise announcement at the Los Angeles premiere of "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story", the show's second installment. He also announced that production on the third season begins next month.
Edward Gein, known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, confessed to murdering two women in the 1950s and also allegedly made trophies out of bodies and skin of corpses he exhumed from graveyards. Gein's story inspired the Leatherface character in Tobe Hooper's 1974 horror classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre".
The first season of the anthology series, "DAHMER — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story", stars Evan Peters as Dahmer and Niecey Nash as Glenda Cleveland, and tells the story of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. The record-breaking first iteration of Murphy and Ian Brennan's anthology reached 1 billion hours of viewing in its first 60 days, making it one of only four series to achieve this milestone. The show is currently the third most popular Netflix English language series.
Following the massive success of "DAHMER — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story", Netflix ordered two additional installments of the record-breaking anthology series from Murphy and Brennan. The second season, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story", coming to Netflix September 19, chronicles the case of the real-life brothers who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez. The cast includes Javier Bardem as José Menendez, Chloë Sevigny as Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, Cooper Koch as Erik Menendez, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez as Lyle Menendez.
Hunnam has also signed on to lead Amazon's "Criminal".
