Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts are set to reunite for the family drama "Leave the World Behind" based on the upcoming Rumaan Alam novel, which will be published this October. Netflix landed the rights to the novel after a fierce bidding war. The adaptation will be penned by "Mr. Robot" and "Homecoming" creator Sam Esmail, and he will also direct.
Exploring the complexities of parenthood, race, and class, the novel follows two families, strangers to each other, who are forced together on a long weekend gone terribly wrong. Roberts will star as the mother of the family that rents a house and Washington will play the homeowner.
Washington and Roberts previously starred together in Alan J. Pakula's 1993 legal thriller "The Pelican Brief" based on John Grisham's novel of the same name. The actors will also produce alongside Esmail, Chad Hamilton, Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill. Alam is on board to executive produce.
