Harry Styles and Javier Bardem in Talks to Star in Disney's LITTLE MERMAID

Harry Styles Javier Bardem In Talks Disney Little Mermaid

Singer-turned-actor Harry Styles, who made his acting debut in Christopher Nolan's war drama "Dunkirk", and Oscar-winner Javier Bardem are in talks to join Disney's live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid". The film will be directed by Rob Marshall ("Chicago", "Mary Poppins Returns") from a script by David Magee ("Life of Pi").

If the deal goes through, Styles will play Prince Eric, the human that the titular mermaid, Ariel (played by relative newcomer and R&B singer Halle Bailey), falls in love with and saves from drowning. The mermaid dreams of becoming human, so she strikes a deal with her evil aunt Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) to turn her into a human for three days, in exchange for her voice. Bardem is in negotiations for the role of King Triton, Ariel's father and ruler of Atlantica.

Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are also in talks to join the remake. Tremblay would play Flounder, Ariel's best friend, while Awkwafina would give life to Scuttle, the princess's seagull friend.

The film will feature songs from the 1989 animated classic, as well as new tunes from original composer Alan Menken, with lyrics by "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is also producing alongside Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca.

Production is expected to begin early 2020.
