Marc Anthony has joined the cast of "In The Heights", the big-screen adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda and playwright Quiara Alegria Hudes's Tony-winning Broadway musical of the same name. The cast already includes Anthony Ramos ("Hamilton"), Corey Hawkins ("Kong: Skull Island"), Stephanie Beatriz ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine"), Melissa Barrera ("Vida"), Jimmi Smits ("NYPD Blue"), Dascha Polanco ("Orange is the New Black"), and singer/songwriter Leslie Grace.
"In the Heights" tells the story of Usnavi de la Vega (Ramos), a bodega owner in New York City's Washington Heights neighborhood who has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic after inheriting his grandmother's fortune. Anthony will be playing the father of Sonny, Unsavi's younger cousin played by Gregory Diaz IV, which Miranda has described in a tweet as a "brief but pivotal role."
The film is directed by Jon M. Chu ("Crazy Rich Asians", "Now You See Me 2") for Warner Bros. "In the Heights" was originally set up at The Weinstein Co., but after the company's downfall following sexual assault and harassment accusations against Harvey Weinstein, Miranda and Hudes regained control of the film rights.
The film is expected to open in theaters in 2020.
