The show is loosely inspired by a 2014 Esquire article titled "Away" by Chris Jones, and it follows Emma Green, an American astronaut who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous mission to Mars. Netflix has described it as a series about "hope, humanity and how we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things."
"The Path" creator/executive producer Jessica Goldberg is on board as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Swank will also produce alongside Katims, Reeves, Hinderaker and Ed Zwick ("The Last Samurai", "Legends of the Fall"). Zwick will also direct the first episode.
Swank can also be seen in Netflix's sci-fi thriller "I Am Mother" in June.
