Benedict Cumberbatch and Elisabeth Moss to Star in Jane Campion's THE POWER OF THE DOG

Benedict Cumberbatch and Elisabeth Moss to Star in Jane Campion's THE POWER OF THE DOG

Benedict Cumberbatch and Elisabeth Moss are on board to star in Oscar-winner Jane Campion's upcoming film "The Power of the Dog".

The film is based on Thomas Savage's 1967 western novel of the same name, and it tells the story of wealthy Montana brothers Phil (Cumberbatch) and George Burbank, whose lives are permanently disrupted when George secretly marries local widow Rose (Moss), and brings the woman and her son to live on their isolated ranch. An angry Phil wages a relentless war to destroy her by using her son Peter as a pawn.

Campion will direct from her own adaptation, and the film is expected to enter pre-production at the end of the year. This is Campion's eighth feature film and her first since 2009's "Bright Star". She has previously worked with Moss on the crime drama series "Top of the Lake".

Here is what the filmmaker had to say about the novel:
"'The Power of the Dog' is a sublime novel that deserves a life on the big screen. I couldn’t stop thinking about the story, it really haunted me. The themes of masculinity, nostalgia and betrayal are an intoxicating mix. It's also rare to find a story where the themes, the plot and the characters build tension as they reveal each other and even the end is satisfying and unexpected. It will be the first time I've worked with a male lead, which is exciting. Phil is a charismatic and complex character who declares war on his brother's new wife and her teenage son."
Cumberbatch recently starred in the Marvel blockbuster "Avengers: Endgame" and lent his voice to the protagonist of the animated Christmas film "The Grinch". He also finished work on Sam Mendes' World War I drama "1917" and is set to star in the upcoming "Doctor Strange" sequel.

Moss recently appeared in Jordan Peele's horror film "Us", and she can also be seen in the upcoming rock star drama "Her Smell" and the crime drama "The Kitchen". Her future projects include "The Invisible Man" reboot, and the third season of "The Handmaid's Tale".
