Weekend Box-Office: MADEA HALLOWEEN Scares Off JACK REACHER and OUIJA Sequels

It's not uncommon for Tyler Perry flicks to earn solid amounts of money, but this weekend "Boo! A Madea Halloween" actually topped the box-office ahead of some pretty solid competition from "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" and "Ouija: Origin of Evil". I would also mention the comedy "Keeping Up With the Joneses" but that one couldn't even make it into the Top 5.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Boo! A Madea Halloween" finished first and scored a $27.6 million debut, the largest opening for any of Perry's films since 2009's "Madea Goes to Jail" ($41 million opening weekend). The film also divided critics and moviegoers if we look at the "A" it got on CinemaScore versus the 29% rating from Rotten Tomatoes. With Halloween only a week away, the film is looking to keep up the good business.

In second place we have the Tom Cruise starrer "Jack  Reacher: Never Go Back" which opened with $23 million. That's better than the first film's $15 million debut, but the sequel's "B-" from CinemaScore and 40% on Rotten Tomatoes signal a certain disappointment with how this new entry turned out, which might impact the film's earnings next week. While the first film had a slow start but ended up with $80 milliom domestically, this new installment might finish somewhere around $60 million. Still, the film earned $31 million overseas, so it will recuperate its $60 million budget one way or another.

The horror sequel "Ouija: Origin of Evil" finished third with a $14 million debut versus a $9 million budget. Even though that's good, it's also below the first film's $19.8 million opening weekend. In 2014, "Ouija" received a very negative reception, but the sequel ended up with a surprising 81% Rotten Tomatoes rating. However, CinemaScore reports a "C" grade from moviegoers, which means that it probably won't hold well next week.

"The Accountant" fell to #4 but only dropped 43% and earned another $14 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $47.9 million. Rounding up the Top 5 is "The Girl on the Train" with $7.2 million and a domestic total of $58.9 million.

The last of this week's new wide releases, the comedy "Keeping Up With the Joneses" failed to impress with a terrible $5.6 million and a #7 finish.

New Wide Releases: "Boo! A Madea Halloween", "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back", "Ouija: Origin of Evil", "Keeping Up With the Joneses".

Biggest Drop : "Kevin Hart: What Now" (-65.1%)

Smallest Drop : "Storks" (-28%)
