For a third consecutive weekend "Suicide Squad" holds its #1 position while newcomers "Ben-Hur", "War Dogs" and "Kubo and the Two Strings" proved to be weak contenders.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Suicide Squad" held on to the crown with a $20.7 million weekend, bringing the film's domestic cume to $262.2 million, while the international total is now $310.4 million. The comic book movie is still followed closely in second place by last week's new release, "Sausage Party". The R-rated animated feature grossed another $15.3 million this weekend for a $65.3 million total on a $19 million budget. The film's international gross, however, is underwhelming at $6.5 million.
The first of the new releases, "War Dogs" opened in third place with $14.3 million versus a $40 million budget, while another $6.5 million came from overseas markets. The film is rated B on CinemaScore and 59% Rotten Tomatoes.
Laika's new animated feature, "Kubo and the Two Strings" makes its debut at #4 with a modest $12.6 million. It's bad news for the studio as this is the worst opening weekend for any of their five films. Laika's highest earners were "Coraline" with $16.8 million and "The Boxtrolls" with $17.2 million. The latter, however, only managed to gross 50.8 million, while the former finished its theatrical run with $75.2 million. "Kubo and the Two Strings" received an A from CinemaScore and a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It seems that despite very positive reviews from critics, Laika's films don't seem to be able to rival any of the other major studios' animated films.
The last of the new wide releases, the "Ben-Hur" remake, barely made it into the Top 5 with a weak $11.3 million debut, which is nothing short of a disaster for the $100 million production. The flop extends overseas, where the film only managed to gross $10.7 million from 23 markets. The film received harsh reviews from critics (29 % on Rotten Tomatoes), but somehow, the few people who actually saw it enjoyed it (A- on CinemaScore).
New Wide Releases: "War Dogs", "Kubo and the Two Strings", "Ben-Hur".
Biggest Drop : "Sausage Party" (-55%)
Smallest Drop : "Bad Moms" (-29%)
