Weekend Box-Office: Eastwood's SULLY Conquers the Box-Office

weekend-box-office-report-sully-tops-charts

The biopic "Sully" dominated the box-office this weekend, while the other new releases, "When the Bough Breaks", "The Wild Life" and "The Disappointments Room" failed to impress.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Director Clint Eastwood's biopic "Sully" made an impressive debut with $35.5 million over the weekend, giving its star, Tom Hanks, his first #1 film in a very long time. Even the successful "Captain Phillips" only managed a #2 debut in 2013.  His last movie to dominate the box-office on its opening weekend was 2009's "Angels & Demons". Hanks can also hope to score another box-office hit when the new Dan Brown adaptation "Inferno" hits theaters in October. As for "Sully", this debut is the fifth largest September opening of all-time, the largest September opening for Warner Bros, and the largest post-Labor Day opening of all-time. The film received an "A" from CinemaScore and an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In second place, the thriller "When the Bough Breaks" made a decent $15 million debut versus a $10 million production budget, but while the Screen Gems feature cleared its costs, it still falls short of the studio's other similarly marketed films, like "No Good Deed", which opened with $24.2 million last year. Furthermore, with a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score and a "B" grade on CinemaScore, the film will certainly take a steep dive next week.

In third place, the horror film "Don't Breathe" is holding steady with a $8.2 million weekend and a $66.8 million domestic total. At #4, "Suicide Squad" has grossed another $5.6 million and its worldwide total is extremely close to crossing the $700 million mark.

Rounding up the Top 5 is another new release, the Belgian animated feature "The Wild Life" with $3.4 million. It's not a great result, but the film has had better luck internationally, where it has grossed $20.8 million. The production budget is also pretty small at an estimated $13.5 million. The film received a "B-" from moviegoers according to CinemaScore and a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 15%.

Unfortunately, the last of the new wide releases, Relativity's "The Disappointments Room" disappointed by not even making it into the Top 10. In fact, it didn't even make it into the first 15 films. The psychological thriller starring Kate Beckinsale grossed $1.4 million from 1,554 theaters. The film received a "D" from CinemaScore and it currently holds a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

New Wide Releases: "Sully", "When the Bough Breaks", "The Disappointments Room", "The Wild Life".
