The box-office took a bit of a hit due to Hurrican Matthew, but that didn't stop "The Girl on the Train" from taking the top spot. Meanwhile, controversial filmmaker Nate Parker's debut "The Birth of a Nation" got off to a slow start along with the young adult comedy "Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life".
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
The mystery thriller "The Girl on the Train" picked up a solid $24.6 million on its opening weekend, a bit short of what pundits predicted, perhaps a result of the mixed to negative reviews the film has been receiving (44% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B-" on CinemaScore). It's a far cry from David Fincher's "Gone Girl", which opened with $37.5 million in 2014. Still, with an additional $16.5 million grossed internationally from 34 territories, it's well on its way to recuperating its $45 million budget and turning a profit.
Last week's #1, Tim Burton's "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" dropped to second place with $15 million, a 48% second weekend drop. The domestic total has now reached $51 million and it's also brought in $94 million from overseas markets.
Peter Berg's "Deepwater Horizon" also moved down a notch from second to third with $11.7 million, while "The Magnificent Seven" placed fourth with $9.1 million, which brings the remake to $75 million domestically. The Top 5 is rounded up by the animated feature "Storks" with $8.4 million over the weekend and a $50.1 million domestic total.
The historical drama "The Birth of a Nation" made a disappointing debut in sixth place with $7.1 million. The reason for this bad start is probably the controversy surrounding director and lead actor Nate Parker's involvement in a 1999 rape case. The film only cost $10 million to produce, but Fox Searchlight invested $17.5 million to buy its distribution rights at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, and they probably hoped for more. The studio is expecting a solid hold due to the film's positive reception which can be noticed both on Rotten Tomatoes (79%) and CinemaScore (A).
This weekend's other new wide release, the comedy "Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life" scored a $6.9 million debut versus a $8.5 million budget. The film received an "A-" on CinemaScore and a score of 59% on Rotten Tomatoes.
New Wide Releases: "The Girl on the Train", "The Birth of a Nation", "Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life".
Biggest Drop : "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" (-48%)
