It wasn't a great weekend, but "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" and "Deepwater Horizon" managed to break out to the top of the box-office charts with relatively modest results.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Tim Burton's "Miss Peregrine" finished in first place with an estimated $28.5 million versus a $110 million budget. That's really not very good, but it did add another $36.5 million internationally, which at the end of its theatrical run will add up to something that will at least break even with the studio's costs. The film received a "B+" from CinemaScore and a mixed 64% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In second place we have Peter Berg's true story disaster flick "Deepwater Horizon" which opened with an even softer $20.6 million, and $12.4 million more from overseas markets. The film's budget is also estimated at $110 million, which puts the studio in a tough spot, although I don't think anyone expected a hard-hitting subject matter like this to really gross summer blockbuster money. The film received an "A-" on CinemaScore and an 82% (Certified Fresh) on Rotten Tomatoes.
"The Magnificent Seven" got bumped to third place where it earned $15.7 million over the weekend for a $61.6 million domestic total, bringing it even closer to recuperating its $90 million budget.
The animated feature "Storks" fell to #4 with $13.8 million for a soft 35% drop and a total domestic gross of $38.8 million.
Rounding up the Top 5 is Clint Eastwood's "Sully" with $8.4 million, which brings the true story drama over the $100 million mark. This is the director's fifth film to cross the milestone, and Tom Hanks' fourteenth.
The newly released comedy "Masterminds" opened with $6.6 million for a #6 finish. That's a triple six right there for the long-delayed comedy. The film received a "B-" on CinemaScore and generally mixed to negative reviews for a 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Disney's feel-good biopic "Queen of Katwe" expanded nationwide this week but only managed to gross $2.6 million over the weekend for a #7 finish.
New Wide Releases: "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children", "Deepwater Horizon", "Masterminds", "Queen of Katwe".

Smallest Drop : "Storks" (-35%)
