"The Accountant" swooped in and pushed "The Girl on the Train" off its #1 position at the box-office. The stand-up comedy concert film "Kevin Hart: What Now?" also provided an impressive opening. Meanwhile, Mattel's superhero flick "Max Steel" flopped big time.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"The Accountant" opened in first place with $24.7 million. The Ben Affleck starrer defied expectations by matching and narrowly exceeding last week's $24.5 million that "The Girl on the Train" grossed in its opening weekend. While the foreign box-office isn't spectacular, the domestic gross could prove enough for "The Accountant" to turn in a decent profit since it's expected to hold well in the next weeks and it only cost $44 million to produce. The film received an "A-" from CinemaScore, but critics weren't too happy with it as it only holds a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Kevin Hart's "What Now ?" made a solid debut with $11.9 million for a second place finish. This is the largest opening ever for a stand-up comedy film, and an improvement over Hart's previous concert film "Let Me Explain" which opened with $10 million. The film received an "A-" from CinemaScore and 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.
"The Girl on the Train" dropped 51.2% and grossed $11.9 million over the weekend for a third place finish. The film's domestic total has reached $46.5 million and it also grossed $33.1 million internationally.
Rounding up the Top 5 are Tim Burton's "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" with $8.9 million and a domestic total of $65.8 million, and Peter Berg's "Deepwater Horizon" with $6.3 million over the weekend and $49.3 million domestically. Both films cost $110 million to produce, and while the former is doing especially well overseas where it has earned $130.9 million, the latter is having a harder time breaking even. That, however, was to be expected given that Berg's film focuses on a difficult topic and can't really be described as a "fun" film to enjoy over the weekend.
Nate Parker's "The Birth of a Nation" suffered a heavy 61% drop from its already terrible opening weekend. The film grossed $2.7 million this weekend for a disappointing $12.2 million total.
And speaking of disappointments, Mattel's first live-action feature film based on one of their toys, "Max Steel", failed to make it into the top 10. The superhero flick grossed a terrible $2.1 million from 2,034 theaters. This is the thirteenth worst opening for a film opening in more than 2,000 theaters. It can all be explained by the "B" received on CinemaScore and the 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
