Cate Blanchett to Reprise Valka Role in Live-Action HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 Remake

Cate Blanchett How To Train Your Dragon 2 Live Action Remake

Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is set to reprise her role from the animated "How to Train Your Dragon 2" movie in Universal and DreamWorks' upcoming live-action remake. In the original films, she voiced Valka, the long-lost mother of Hiccup, and wife of Viking leader Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler).

The remake of the animated trilogy's second installment will continue the adventures of Hiccup (Mason Thames), the dragon-befriending Viking who opened up his village to the possibilities of coexisting with the flying, fire-breathing creatures. The cast will also include Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn.

The sequel is written and directed by Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker who previously helmed the animated films: "How to Train Your Dragin" in 2010, "How to Train Your Dragon 2" in 2014, and "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" in 2019. He also helmed the 2025 live-action remake, which earned $646 million worldwide, becoming the fourth-largest Hollywood release of the year.

Marc Platt ("Wicked") is producing via his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions alongside Adam Siegel, president of Marc Platt Productions. The live-action "How to Train Your Dragon 2" remake will open in theaters on June 11, 2027.
