Weekend Box Office: AVATAR Dominates DAVID, THE HOUSEMAID and SPONGEBOB

Weekend Box Office Avatar Fire Ash David Housemaid Spongebob Movie

"Avatar: Fire and Ash" is unsurprisingly the big champion at the box office, effortlessly dominating its debut frame against newcomers that included the Biblical animated film "David", the R-rated thriller "The Housemaid" starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, and the animated film "The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants". The latter three films did perform well enough, considering they had to go against James Cameron's juggernaut, and all four new wide releases dominated the Top 5.

"Avatar: Fire and Ash" crushed all competition, taking the top spot in its opening weekend with $89.1 million from 3,800 theaters. While definitely impressive, it's not a record-breaking debut, and clearly the third installment in James Cameron's epic sci-fi saga underperformed. The threequel's debut falls behind "Avatar: The Way of Water", which opened with $134.1 million in 2022, and even the 2009 original, which scored $77 million in its opening weekend that adjusted for inflation would amount to $116.3 million in 2025. To be fair, though, "Fire and Ash" opened with 400 fewer theaters than "Way of Water". The new installment also raked in another $258.1 million from international markets, bringing its worldwide debut to $347.3 million.

It's a big opening weekend, for sure, but so is the film's production budget estimated to be somewhere between $350 million and over $400 million. The "Avatar" movies, however, are all about legging it for the long haul, raking in the big bucks over a long period of time. It remains to be seen what kind of legs this new one will have. "Avatar: Fire and Ash" received mixed reviews from critics (66% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception has been positive ("A" CinemaScore).

The animated Biblical musical adventure film "David" opened in second place with $22 million from 3,118 theaters. It's a decent debut, but the movie really needs to keep up the pace in the next few weeks if it hopes to recoup its $60 million budget and make a profit. No international numbers are available as the movie was only released in Portugal and South Africa, and most major international markets will follow next Easter. Still, this is Angel Studios' biggest opening weekend, surpassing "The Sound of Freedom" ($19.6 million) and "The King of Kings" ($19.4 million). "David" received a positive reception from both critics (70% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).

Paul Feig's adaptation of Freida McFadden's popular novel "The Housemaid" opened in third place with $19 million from 3,015 theaters against a $35 million budget. This ranks as the eighth R-rated December debut. In 2023, Sweeney's romantic comedy "Anyone But You" opened on December 11 with only $6 million, but went on to gross $88.3 million. The critical reception was mostly positive (75% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception is lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).

The last of the new wide releases, "The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants" made its debut in fourth place with $15.6 million from 3,557 theaters. It's a disappointing debut, much less than the $32 million and $55 million opening weekends of the previous SpongeBob movies. The new film cost around $64 million to produce. Both critics and audiences enjoyed the movie (84% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A-" CinemaScore).

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Zootopia 2" with $14.8 million, down 42.6% from the previous frame. The film has now grossed $283.1 in North America, and another $993.1 million from foreign markets. That's a worldwide total of $1.2 billion.

In other news, Josh Safdie"s table tennis biopic "Marty Supreme" opened in only six theaters and finished in ninth place with $875,000, which is a spectacular performance for such a limited release.
