Apple's Brad Pitt sports drama "F1: The Movie" dominated the box-office race and is off to a great start, snatching first place from "How to Train Your Dragon" and breaking a record in the process. Meanwhile, the sci-fi action sequel "M3GAN 2.0" failed to impress as it opened way below expectations.

"F1: The Movie" topped the box office charts with $57 million from 3,661 theaters, which is the best opening for a live-action racing film, surpassing "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" ($47 million opening in 2006). It's also Brad Pitt's second highest opening, behind "World War Z" ($66.4 million in 2013). The film raked in another $89.3 million overseas for a worldwide total of $146.3 million. Its biggest problem, however, is its production budget, which ranges between $200 and $300 million. The film has received a positive reception from both critics and moviegoers ("83% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).
The live-action remake "How to Train Your Dragon" dropped to second place with $19.5 million, a 46.4% decline in its third weekend. The film has now grossed $200.2 million in North America and another $255.8 million from foreign markets, which all adds up to a total of $456 million.
Pixar's "Elio" is holding in third place but continues to disappoint with $10.4 million, a 50% drop in its sophomore frame. With only $41.9 million domestically and $30.1 million internationally, the film, which reportedly cost well north of $200 million, maybe even closer to $300 million, will probably end up being pretty devastating loss for the studio.
In a surprising fourth place finish we find the sequel "M3GAN 2.0", which opened with only $10.2 million from 3,112 theaters. That's well below the first film's $30.4 million opening weekend in 2022. That film ended up grossing $95.1 million domestically and another $84.9 million from foreign markets. The sequel added only $6.8 million internationally, which brings its global debut to a paltry $17 million. The saving grace here is that the film only cost $25 million to produce, but even so, it's going to have a hard time turning a profit. "M3GAN 2.0" received a mixed reception from critics (57% on Rotten Tomatoes), and moviegoers somewhat enjoyed it ("B+" CinemaScore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by the horror sequel "28 Years Later" with $9.7 million, down a pretty steep 67.5% in its second weekend. The film's domestic total has reached $50.4 million, while overseas it raked in another $52.7 million for a worldwide total of $103.1 million, which is already higher than each of the previous installments ("28 Days Later" - 74.9 million; "28 Weeks Later" - $72.3 million).
