Zach Braff Set To Return For SCRUBS Reboot

Zach Braff Returns Scrubs Reboot

As previously announced, a reboot of the beloved medical comedy series "Scrubs" is currently in the works from creator Bill Lawrence. Now it has been revealed that Zach Braff will reprise his role as John "J.D." Dorian in the "Scrubs" sequel series developed at ABC from 20th Television. No filming location has been announced. Lawrence will not be writing or showrunning the new show as he has four other series for WBTV, "Shrinking", "Ted Lasso", "Bad Monkey" and an upcoming Steve Carell HBO comedy.

According to sources, Braff's deal comes after months of tough negotiations that hit major hurdles over both money and Braff's request for the series to film in Los Angeles and not Vancouver as originally planned. There were even times when the project was close to being cancelled, but the two sides recently came to an agreement.

From now on, 20th TV is expected to start making deals with the other core original cast members, Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid, Donald Faison as Christopher Turk, John C. McGinley as Perry Cox, and Judy Reyes as Carla Espinosa.

In an interview for Deadline, Lawrence said that he envisions Scrubs 2.0 as a hybrid between a revival, revisiting original characters a decade and a half after the original series ended its run, and a reboot, revamping the original concept with new characters as the series is set to introduce new surgical interns.

Braff has continued his relationship with Lawrence through the years. He directed episodes of "Ted Lasso", earning DGA and Emmy nominations, as well as Season 2 and 3 episodes of "Shrinking", and the untitled Steve Carell project for HBO created by Lawrence and "Scrubs" writer/producer Matt Tarses. He also did an arc on "Bad Monkey".

Braff recently wrapped the indie film "Clean Hands", based on the life of hero drug cop-turned-recovery advocate Kevin Simmers and his daughter Brooke, and can next be seen in Focus Features' "Girls Like Girls".
