Weekend Box Office: HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Beats 28 YEARS LATER In Its Sophomore Frame While ELIO Tanks

Weekend Box Office How To Train Your Dragon 28 Years Later Elio

The "How to Train Your Dragon" live-action remake managed to hold on to its top spot position against Danny Boyle's zombie horror sequel "28 Years Later", which didn't quite explode at the box office, but did okay for an R-rated horror film and a sequel to a franchise which saw its last installment 18 years ago. Meanwhile, Pixar's latest original film "Elio" failed to find its audience and provided a bleak record for the studio.

Read more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"How to Train Your Dragon" dominated its second weekend with $36.5 million, down 56.8% from its debut. The film has now grossed $160 million in North America, and another $199.6 million from foreign markets, which brings its worldwide total to $359.7 million.

"28 Years Later" opened in second place with $30 million from 3,444 theaters. The original, "28 Days Later" opened with $10 million in 2002 and went on to gross $45 million, making it the 13th-highest grossing domestic release in the history of Searchlight Pictures. The second installment didn't do so well, opening with $9.8 million and finishing with $28.6 million domestically. "28 Years Later" raked in another $30 million internationally for a global debut of $60 million. The film reportedly cost around $60 million to produce. The second weekend will be the key to figuring out if this is going to make a profit or not. The critical reception was stellar (90% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception, not so much ("B" CinemaScore).

Pixar's "Elio" opened in third place with $20.8 million from 3,750 screens, which is the studio's lowest opening ever. And a bad start for a movie that cost $150 million. Still, Pixar movies do tend to have solid staying power, so it might not end up a total bomb. Even "Elemental" which opened with $29.6 million in 2023, ended up grossing $154.4 million domestically and $342 million overseas. Time will tell. "Elio" did receive a positive reception from both critics and moviegoers (83% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).

Disney's live-action remake "Lilo & Stitch" finished its fifth weekend in fourth place with $9.7 million. That's a soft 38.1% drop. The domestic total is now at $386.7 million, while internationally it adds another $524.2 million for a global tally of $911 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the Tom Cruise action extravaganza "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" with $6.4 million. The film dropped a solid 38.8% in its fifth weekend, and has now grossed a total of $178.2 million in North America and $362.5 million overseas. That adds up to a wordlwide cume of $540.7 million against a $400 million budget.

In other news, the three-hour Indian film "Kuberaa" opened in tenth place with $1.7 million from 500 theaters.
