Dwayne Johnson is set to work once more with A24 following the MMA biopic "The Smashing Machine". This time he will be joining the studio's psychological thriller "Breakthrough" written by up-and-comer Zeke Goodman. No director is attached yet.
The story is set in turn-of-the-millennium Southern California, and it follows an alienated young man who comes under the influence of a motivational guru, whose intoxicating charm masks his morally questionable methods of manipulation and his own concealed darkness. Johnson will play the supporting role of the guru. Casting is still underway for the lead role and other supporting parts.
The film will be produced and financed by A24. Stacey Sher's Shiny Penny Productions will produce alongside Johnson and Dany Garcia's Seven Bucks Productions, with Jacob Epstein and Justin Wolf to executive produce via Lighthouse Management and Media.
Johnson is also set to produce "Ripped", an adaptation of the short story by Joe Ballarini, at 20th Century Studios, and there's a good chance he may also star in it. He's also set to star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt in the untitled Hawaiian crime drama directed by Martin Scorsese. He can next be seen playing MMA fighter Mark Kerr in "The Smashing Machine" from director Benny Safdie, which opens in theaters on October 3rd.
