Weekend Box Office: HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Beats LILO & STITCH In Duel of the Live-Action Remakes

Weekend Box Office How To Train Your Dragon 2025 Lilo And Stitch Live Action Remake Battle

In the very definition of "creative bankruptcy", this past weekend saw two live-action remakes from rival studios duking it out for the top spot at the box-office. It wasn't much of a battle, though, as DreamWorks' new "How to Train Your Dragon" effortlessly swooped in to dethrone Disney's new "Lilo & Stitch", which was already in its fourth weekend in theaters. Meanwhile, for the grown-up moviegoers, we had A24's "Materialists" starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, which did okay in its first weekend, and the Stephen King adaptation "The Life of Chuck", which failed to find an audience as it expanded nationwide.

"How to Train Your Dragon" took the top spot with $84.6 million from 4,336 theaters. The original animated film opened with $43.7 million in 2010. Among similar films, the updated version ranks eighth in a list that's mostly full of Disney live-action remakes, sandwiched between 2019's "Aladdin" ($91.5 million) and 2014's "Maleficent" ($69.4 million). Overseas, the film raked in $113 million for a worldwide total of $197.6 million. The remake has received a mostly positive reception from both critics and moviegoers (78% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).

"Lilo & Stitch" dropped to second place with $15.7 million in its fourth weekend in theaters. That's a fairly steep 51.4% decline from last week. The film has now grossed a total of $368.6 million domestically and $492 million internationally, which adds up to $860.6 million worldwide against a $100 million budget.

The A24 romantic comedy "Materialists" directed by Celine Song ("Past Lives") opened in third place with $12 million from 2,844 theaters. That's the studios' third biggest opening, behind "Hereditary" ($13.5 million) and "Civil War" ($25.5 million). The film received glowing reviews from critics (85% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was lukewarm ("B-" Cinemascore).

"Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" finished its fourth weekend in fourth place with $10.5 million, which is a very soft 28.8% decline. The film has managed to cross the $500 million mark worldwide, becoming the sixth film in the franchise to do so, with $167.6 million in North America and $340.5 million from foreign markets.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the John Wick spinoff "Ballerina" with $9.7 million. That's a catastrophic 60.2% decline from an already disappointing opening weekend. The $90 million movie has now raked in $43.1 million domestically and another $49.7 million overseas for a worldwide total of $92.8 million.

Mike Flanagan's acclaimed Stephen King adaptation "The Life of Chuck" tanked in ninth place with $2.3 million from 1,072 theaters. The film expanded nationwide, adding 1,056 theaters, but Neon failed to capitalize on the film winning the People's Choice Award at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival and receiving rave reviews from critics (82% on Rotten Tomatoes).
