A24 and Kojima Productions' upcoming movie adaptation of Hideo Kojima's "Death Stranding" video game will be written and directed by "A Quiet Place: Day One" and "Pig" filmmaker Michael Sarnoski. "Midsommar" and "Hereditary" producer Lars Knudsen and writer/director Ari Aster are on board as producers.
First announced in 2022, the film is said to delve into the game's mysteries surrounding the "Death Stranding", a catastrophic series of events that blurred the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead, while also introducing "new elements and characters" to the world. The game's creator described the film as something "that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film.".
Speaking about the project, Kojima said: "I made Death Stranding to be a game, and games are games. There's no real need to turn them into films. So in a way, the Death Stranding movie is taking a direction that nobody has tried before with a movie adaptation of a game."
He also added: "A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last eight years".
The game, which launched in November 2019 for PS4, was played by more than 19 million worldwide. The game's all-star cast included Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro and Margaret Qualley. A sequel was recently announced by Kojima Productions at SXSW, which will be titled "Death Stranding 2: On the Beach", and will be released on June 26th. Reedus, Seydoux, Nicolas Winding Refn and Troy Baker will be part of the cast alongside Luca Marinelli, George Miller and Elle Fanning.
Sarnoski is currently deep in postproduction on his next film "Death of Robin Hood" at A24, which stars Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer.
