Weekend Box Office: SNOW WHITE Remake Fizzles With $42 Million Debut

Weekend Box Office Snow White 2025

Disney's latest live-action remake "Snow White" topped the weekend box office, but its underwhelming debut makes it a potentially imminent flop for the studio. Meanwhile, Robert De Niro's new ganster drama "The Alto Knights" bombed in its debut, adding to yet another lacklustre weekend at the box office (-27% from 2024).

"Snow White" dominated the weekend with $42.2 million from 4,200 theaters, which ended up lower than what pundits predicted, ultimately failing to match the 2019 "Dumbo" remake's $46 million opening weekend. Among Disney's live-action redos, "Snow White" is pretty much at the bottom of the list, only ranking ahead of the 1996 "101 Dalmatians" remake which opened with $33.5 million (unadjusted for inflation).

The film only raked in another $43.9 million from foreign markets, which brings the global total to $86.1 million. With a reported budget of $270 million, it would need to gross close to $600 million just to break even, which doesn't seem possible with such a soft opening.

"Snow White" received negative reviews from critics, but the audience reception was mostly mixed ("B+" CinemaScore). Last year, "Mufasa: The Lion King" got an "A-" from CinemaScore.

Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller "Black Bag" is holding in second place with $4.2 million, dropping a decent 44%. The film has now grossed $14.7 million domestically and $9.2 million overseas.

"Captain America: Brave New World" climbed from fourth to third place this week with $4 million, down a soft 29.3% from the previous frame. After six weeks in theaters, the film has grossed a total of $192 million in North America and $209.2 million from foreign markets, adding up to a worldwide total of $401.3 million.

The Jack Quaid action comedy "Novocaine" fell from first to fourth place with $3.6 million in its sophomore frame, a steep 58.2% decline from its debut. Its domestic cume now stands at $15.6 million, while overseas it raked in another $5.3 million. Not a great result for the movie, despite it costing only $18 million to produce.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Warner Bros' bomb "Mickey 17", which grossed $3.6 million in its third weekend. This brings its domestic cume to $40 million, with another $69.8 million internationally adding up to a worldwide tally of $109.8 million. With a budget of $118 million, the movie is currently expected to lose the studio around $75 million.

The other new wide release, "The Alto Knights" tanked in sixth place with a low $3.1 million debut from 2,651 theaters. Internationally it picked up another $1.9 million. The movie reportedly cost around $50 million to make. Critics disliked the movie (38% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the audience reception was lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).

Other films with semi-wide releaases that failed to make the Top 10 include the long-delayed "Magazine Dreams" starring Jonathan Majors, which opened with only $701,365 from 815 theaters, while the sci-fi horror film "Ash" starring Eiza Gonzalez and Aaron Paul only managed to gross $689,114 from 1,136 theaters.
