STARSHIP TROOPERS Reboot In The Works From Neill Blomkamp

Starship Troopers 1997 Movie Casper Van Dien

A new "Starship Troopers" is moving forward at Sony with filmmaker Neill Blomkamp ("District 9", "Elysium") set to write and direct. While plot details are under wraps, the new movie will go back to the 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein and is not a remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1997 classic film. Blomkamp will produce with his wife and "Chappie" collaborator, Terri Tatchell.

The original film was something of a flop, grossing only $121 million worldwide against a $100 million budget. Since then, the film has become a cult classic and helped launch the careers of Denise Richards, Casper Van Dien and Jake Busey. It spawned two direct-to-video sequels in 2004 ("Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation") and 2008 ("Starship Troopers 3: Marauder"), as well as two CGI animated films in 2012 ("Starship Troopers: Invasion") and 2017 ("Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars") and an animated TV series that ran between 1999 and 2000. There have also been several video game adaptation based on the original film: "Starship Troopers: Continuum" (2024), "Starship Troopers: Extermination" (2023), "Starship Troopers: Terran Command" (2022), "Starship Troopers" (2005) and "Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy" (2000).

Blomkamp and Sony have a long collaborative history together, which includes the filmmaker's "District 9", "Chappie" and "Elysium", as well as the PlayStation video game adaptation "Gran Turismo". "District 9" is the filmmaker's most acclaimed feature, earning four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for Blomkamp and co-writer Tatchell.
