Mike Flanagan to Direct New EXORCIST Movie as Blumhouse Overhauls Franchise Plans

Mike Flanagan To Direct Radical New The Exorcist Movie

David Gordon Green's "The Exorcist: Believer" was a disaster, grossing a modest $136.2 million worldwide after Blumhouse spent no less than $400 million to buy the rights for the franchise from Morgan Creek. It was also widely panned by both critics and audiences. All this led to Blumhouse's decision to cancel its originally planned sequel trilogy and find a new director.

The studio has already picked Mike Flanagan ("Doctor Sleep", "The Haunting of Hill House", "Midnight Mass") to write, direct and produce a new "The Exorcist" movie that will feature an all-new story and will not be a sequel to 2023's "Believer".

The new installment has been described as a "radical new take". Flanagan also stated the following: "’The Exorcist’ is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.".

Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum also said: "Mike's voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of ‘The Exorcist’ and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.":

The new "Exorcist" movie will be produced by longtime collaborators Trevor Macy for Intrepid Pictures and Flanagan via his new Red Room Pictures banner. John Scherer will also be working on the film on behalf of Intrepid. It marks the fourth collaboration for Flanagan and Blumhouse following 2013's "Oculus", 2016's "Hush" and 2016's "Ouija: Origin of Evil", which were all also produced by Macy.
