Cannes 2024 Winners: Sean Baker's ANORA Earns Palme d'Or

Sean Baker won the Palme d'Or for the dramedy "Anora", which tells the story of the beleaguered romance of a sex worker (Mikey Madison) with the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). Baker is the first American filmmaker to take home the festival's top prize since Terrence Malick did so in 2011 with "The Tree of Life". Baker previously directed films like "The Florida Project" and "Red Rocket", both of which debuted at Cannes.

Camille Cottin ("Call My Agent") hosted the awards for the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where Greta Gerwig presided over a jury comprised of Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, Turkish actor-screenwriter Ebru Ceylan, Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, American actor Lily Gladstone, Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, Lebanese actor-director Nadine Labaki and French stars Eva Green and Omar Sy.

Payal Kapadia accepted the Grand Prix, the festival's second-highest award, for "All We Imagine as Light". This was the first Indian film selected for competition in 30 years. Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes won the directing award for "Grand Tour", while the best screenplay prize went to French director Coralie Fargeat for the horror film "The Substance" starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley.

A special award was created by the jury for Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, who attended the Cannes Film Festival at great personal risk, fleeing an eight-year prison sentence for making political drama "The Seed of the Sacred Fig".

The acting awards went to Jesse Plemons for "Kinds of Kindness" and the entire female ensemble cast of "Emilia Perez".
