The "Mad Max" spin-off "Furiosa" is off to a lackluster start, but still opened in first place over the worst Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades. The animated film "The Garfield Movie" came close, but had to settle with second place. Things might change when the final numbers come in, since both studios are reporting that its own movie is the weekend's No.1. The other new wide release, Angel Studios' biographical drama "Sight" tanked in its opening weekend.

"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" opened in first place with $25.5 million from 3,804 theaters over the 3-day frame, which is way below initial predictions that had the movie pegged for a $40 million debut. "Mad Max: Fury Road" opened with $45.4 million in 2015. The prequel spin-off is expected to rake in $31 million through Monday. The film also raked in $33.3 million overseas from 75 markets, which brings the worldwide debut to $58.8 million. The biggest problem for Warner Bros' blockbuster is that it cost around $168 million to produce. The critical reception was overwhelmingly positive (90% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers were slightly less enthusiastic ("B+" CinemaScore).
"The Garfield Movie" finished in a close second place with $ 24.7 million from 4,035 theaters over the 3-day weekend, and is also expected to end the 4-day run with around $31 million. Overseas it has already grossed $66.3 million, which brings its worldwide tally to $91.1 million. However, the Garfield movie only cost $60 million to produce. The critical reception was terrible (38% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers were pretty okay with it ("B+" CinemaScore).
Last week's #1 movie "IF" dropped to third place and grossed $16.1 milion in its sophomore frame, down 52% from its debut. The film has now grossed $58.6 million in North America and $40 million in foreign markets.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "The Fall Guy" with $5.9 million, a soft 29.1% decline from last week. The film has now grossed $73.8 million domestically and $71.6 million internationally.
In other news, Angel Studios' "Sight" opened in seventh place with $2.6 million from 2,100 screens, performing well below other faith-based releases of 2024. The film received mixed reviews from critics (63% on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore).
