Paramount's "IF" opened in first place with $35 million from 4,041 theaters, but it was expected to rake in at least $40 million in its opening weekend. It's a pretty weak start for a film that cost around $110 million to produce before marketing. Overseas it added another $20 million from 58 countries, which brings the worldwide total to $55 million. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (49% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore).
Last week's #1 movie "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" dropped to second place with $26 million. That's a 55% drop from its opening weekend. The film has now grossed $101.2 million domestically and another $136.3 million overseas, which brings the global tally to $237.5 million.
Another newcomer, the slasher horror film "The Strangers: Chapter 1" opened in third place with $12 million from 2,856 theaters, besting expectations of a $7-9 million debut. The film's small $8.5 million production budget is a huge advantage, but don't expect word-of-mouth to help this one as audiences weren't impressed ("C" CinemaScore). The critical reception was also pretty brutal (13% on Rotten Tomatoes).
"The Fall Guy" finished its third weekend in fourth place with $8.4 million, down 38.3% from the previous frame. The film's domestic tally has reached $62.9 million. Overseas it adds another $64.5 million for a worldwide total of $127.5 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Challengers" with $2.9 million, which fell 32.8%, and has now grossed $43.5 million in North America. It also raked in a total of $35.2 million from overseas markets, which brings its global total to $78.7 million.
The biopic "Back to Black" tanked in sixth place with $2.8 million debut from 2,010 theaters. Overseas it has already grossed $37 million. The film received negative reviews from critics (35% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was a little better ("B+" CinemaScore).
In other news, Amazon MGM Studios' IMAX-exclusive release of the documentary "The Blue Angels" opened in ninth place with $1.3 million from 227 theaters. The doc will be released via Prime Video on May 23rd.
