Pauly Shore ("Encino Man", "Bio-Dome", "Pinocchio: A True Story") has landed the role of fitness icon Richard Simmons. The biopic is currently in development at Warner Bros. subsidiary The Wolper Organization, with additional casting underway.
Shortly after the announcement went public, Simmons himself disavowed the project, posting the following on social media "Hi Everybody! You may have heard they may be doing a movie about me with Pauly Shore. I have never given my permission for this movie. So don't believe everything you read. I no longer have a manager, and I no longer have a publicist. I just try to live a quiet life and be peaceful. Thank you for all your love and support."
The film follows an unrelated short film titled "The Court Jester" from writer/director Jake Lewis, which will premiere at Sundance on January 19, and also stars Shore as Simmons. After premiering in Park City, "The Court Jester" will immediately be available worldwide on YouTube.
Here's what Shore had to say in a statement: "I’m really excited about sharing Richard Simmons’s life with the world. We all need this biopic now more than ever. Simmons represented mental health, getting people in shape and being his authentic silly self! Whenever he was on TV you could never take your eyes off of him and he brought such a joy to his appearances that represented nothing but a good time.".
The Wolper Organization has produced over 500 films and television projects, which have won two Oscars, 50 Emmys and seven Golden Globes. The studio is responsible for "Roots", "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory", "L.A. Confidential" and much more.
