Michelle Yeoh To Star as Madame Morrible in Jon M. Chu's WICKED

Michelle Yeoh Picture

Michelle Yeoh ("Everything Everywhere All at Once") has signed on to star in the upcoming two-part adaptation of the hit Broadway Musical "Wicked", which will be directed by Jon M. Chu ("Crazy Rich Asians").

The movie is a prequel to "The Wizard of Oz", and it's based on Gregory Maguire's novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West". It tells the story of how Elphaba turned into the Wicked Witch of the West and how Glinda became the Good Witch.

Ariana Grande will star as Glinda, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, and Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard. Yeoh will play Madame Morrible, the headmistress of Crage Hall at Shiz University. It has also been reported that "Bridgerton" star Jonathan Bailey will play Fiyero and Broadway veteran Ethan Slater ("SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical") will take on the role of Boq.

The musical's original creative team, original book writer Winnie Holzman and composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz are collaborating with Chu on the film's screenplay.

The first film will be released in theaters in December 2024, and the second part will arrive in 2025.
