As the summer season begins to slow down, Warner Bros' animated film "DC League of Super-Pets" topped the weekend box-office, but didn't exactly score an impressive debut. "The Office" writer/executive producer/director/actor BJ Novak's feature directorial debut "Vengeance" also opened in semi-wide release, with mixed result.

"DC League of Super-Pets" opened in first place with $23 million from 4,314 theaters, while overseas it grossed $18.4 million from 64 overseas markets. That's an opening of $41.4 million worldwide against a $90 million production budget. The film received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics (71% on Rotten Tomatoes), but a solid reception from moviegoers ("A-" CinemaScore). It's a slow debut that may be salvaged by the strong word-of-mouth, but time will tell.
Last week's #1 movie "Nope" dropped to second place in its sophomore weekend and grossed $18.5 million, dropping 58.2% from its debut. It's a steeper second weekend decline than Jordan Peele's "Us" (-53%), and "Get Out" (-15.4%). The film's domestic total has reached $80.5 million.
"Thor: Love and Thunder" landed in third place with $13 million. The film dropped 42%, and its domestic tally is now at $301.5 million, while overseas it has raked in a total of $360.9 million. The worldwide total now sits at $662.4 million, quite a long way from the $1 billion mark.
Universal's "Minions: The Rise of Gru" finished fourth in its fifth weekend with $10.8 million, which brings its domestic total to $320.4 million. Overseas it raked in $389.9 million, and its worldwide total has reached $710.3 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Top Gun: Maverick" with $8.2 million. The film dropped a very soft 20.2% and has now hit the $650 million mark at the domestic box-office in its 10th weekend. With another $671 million grossed internationally, the film's global total adds up to $1.32 billion.
In other news, Focus Features and Blumhouse's darkly comic thriller "Vengeance" opened in tenth place with $1.75 million from 998 theaters. The film will get a PVOD release via Peacock in 17 days. It received a positive reception from critics (77% on Rotten Tomatoes), and a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B+" CinemaScore).
