Steven Spielberg's musical "West Side Story" opened in theaters this weekend, but while it topped the charts, it failed to score an impressive debut. Overall, the box-office took a dive this past weekend, with most films continuing to perform poorly post-Thanksgiving.

"West Side Story" opened with $10.5 million from 3,723 theaters. That's bad news for the 20th Century Studio movie, which cost $100 million to produce. The film also raked in another $4.4 million from 37 international markets. The film's saving grace could be the upcoming holiday frame, considering the glowing critical reception (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the impressive "A" Cinemascore. Time will tell if word-of-mouth can save this one.
In second place we have Disney's "Encanto" with $9.4 million over the weekend, which is a softer 28% drop from last week. The animated film has so far grossed $71.3 million domestically and $80.5 million overseas.
"Ghostbusters: Afterlife" finished in third place with 7.1 million. The film dropped 31%, which is decent, and has reached a domestic total of $112 million. Overseas, the film added another $6.4 million for a total of $52.7 million.
Ridley Scott's "House of Gucci" dropped 42% and earned $4 million in its third weekend in theaters. The film's domestic total has now reached $41 million, while overseas it has raked in $51.9 million ($10.1 million this past weekend).
The Top 5 is rounded out by the Disney/Marvel flick "Eternals" with $3.1 million. The film has grossed $161.2 million in North America, and another $234.1 million internationally. The MCU movie "Spider-Man: No Way Home" opens next weekend to high expectation.
