"Ant-Man and the Wasp" and "Killjoys" star Hannah John-Kamen has been cast as the lead in Millennium Films' long-gestating comic book adaptation "Red Sonja". The film will be directed by Joey Soloway ("Transparent") from a script he co-wrote alongside Tasha Huo (writer on Netflix's upcoming "Tomb Raider" series).
Red Sonja was created in the early 1970s by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel's "Conan the Barbarian" comics, and soon proved popular enough for her own spinoff series. The Red Sonja and Conan comics eventually left Marvel and landed at Dynamite Entertainment, which is where Millennium is basing its adaptation.
The comic was previously adapted into the 1985 film "Red Sonja" which starred Brigitte Nielsen, and also featured Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan in a supporting role. Rose McGowan was previously attached to star as the iconic character in 2008. Millennium also recently received criticism when they hired Bryan Singer to direct the project, after he had been fired from "Bohemian Rhapsody" and accused of sexual misconduct.
The producers include Mark Canton ("300") and Courney Solomon ("After"). Millennium's Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson and Trevor Short are executive producing.
John-Kamen recently wrapped production as the lead in Sony's upcoming "Resident Evil" reboot directed by Johannes Roberts ("47 Meters Down").
