Weekend Box-Office: SHAZAM! Works Its Magic With $53M Debut

weekend-box-office-shazam

No surprises over the weekend as the DC Comics movie "Shazam!" secured the top spot and performed slightly better than expected. Meanwhile, the Stephen King adaptation "Pet Sematary" fell a bit behind projections, but still managed a very good debut. The civil rights drama "The Best of Enemies", however, failed to make the Top 5.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"Shazam!" conquered the weekend box-office with an impressive $53.4 million from 4,217 theaters, and after adding the grosses from last month's Fandango special event, the domestic total stands at $56.7 million. Overseas, the film has brought in $102 million from 79 markets. The top international market was China with $30.9 million. "Shazam!" received a very positive critical reception (91% on Rotten Tomatoes and 71 on Metacritic), and audiences loved it ("A" grade from CinemaScore's opening night polls).

The horror film "Pet Sematary" opened in second place with $25 million from 3,585 theaters, a step down from the initial $30 million pundit predictions, but a satisfying result for Paramount, as the film only cost $21 million to produce. It's also the second largest debut for a Stephen King adaptation, behind only the 2017 behemoth "It" ($123.4 million). It also opened in 46 international markets, bringing in another $17.3 million. The film had a hard time convincing critics (61% on Rotten Tomatoes and 58 on Metacritic), and the terrible "C+" CinemaScore grade will make it hard for the film to avoid a steep drop next week.

In third place we find Disney's "Dumbo", which dropped a massive 60% in its second weekend, grossing an estimated $18.2 million. The film's domestic total has now reached $76.2 million, but things aren't looking good for the $170 million production. It's pretty slow overseas, as well, with $39.6 million from 55 markets over the weekend, and an international total that now stands at $137.5 million.

Jordan Peele's horror film "Us" finished in fourth place with $13.8 million after a hard 58% fall. The film has grossed a total of $152.3 million domestically after three weeks, while overseas its tally has reached $64.2 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Marvel's "Captain Marvel" with $12.6 million. The film's domestic total currently stands at $374.1 million, while overseas its cume has reached $663.5 million. With a worldwide total of $1.037 billion, the film has entered the Top 30 all-time.

The last of the new releases, the true story drama "The Best of Enemies" opened in sixth place with $4.5 million from 1,705 theaters. The film received mostly mixed reviews from critics (52% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic), but a warmer reception from moviegoers ("A" grade from CinemaScore).
