Disney's "Dumbo" conquered the weekend box-office, even as Jordan Peele's "Us" and "Captain Marvel" continue to perform well. The film wasn't the huge hit that pundits were predicting, but still managed a solid weekend debut. Meanwhile Pure Flix's anti-abortion drama "Unplanned" overperformed, and Matthew McConaughey's comedy "The Beach Bum" failed to find an audience.

Disney's new live-action remake was expected to surpass the $50 million mark, and the most enthusiastic pundits even predicted a debut above $60 million. In the end, the film only managed a somewhat disappointing $45 million debut, which is among the worst openings for the studio's recent live-action reimaginings. It's better than "Pete's Dragon" ($21.5 million) and "Christopher Robin" ($24.6 million), but well below "Cinderella" ($67.8 million), "The Jungle Book" ($103.2 million) and "Beauty and the Beast" ($174.7 million).
"Dumbo" also brought in $71 million from overseas markets, and was the #1 release in China with a $10.7 million debut, and the U.K. with $7.4 million. It also topped the charts in France, Italy, Russia, Spain, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. The film received mostly mixed reviews from critics (50% on Rotten Tomatoes and 52 on Metacritc), while audiences generally loved it ("A-" grade from CinemaScore's polls).
The horror film "Us" finished in second place with $33.6 million after a 53% drop, and its domestic total has reached $128.2 million after just 10 days. Overseas it brought in $22 million this weekend for a total of $46.3 million.
"Captain Marvel" dropped to #3 with $20.5 million and has grossed a total of $353.8 million domestically in four weeks. With another $636.8 million grossed internationally, the film is very close to the $1 billion milestone.
The teen romantic drama "Five Feet Apart" finished the weekend in fourth place with $6.2 million. The film is currently enjoying the best performance in the Top 10, with a very soft 27% drop in its third week in release. Its domestic tally has reached $35.8 million against a $7 million budget.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the anti-abortion drama "Unplanned", which opened with $6.1 million from 1,059 theaters. This is Pure Flix's second largest debut behind "God's Not Dead 2" ($7.6 million). The film stirred some controversy, and its ads were refused by Lifetime, Hallmark, HGTV and others. It received mixed or negative reviews, depending on which site you visit (53% on Rotten Tomatoes and 11 on Metacritic), but the audience response was very positive ("A+" grade from CinemaScore).
A surprise in the Top 10 is "Hotel Mumbai", which expanded into 920 additional theaters and finished in eighth place with $3.1 million from 1,844 theaters.
The comedy "The Beach Bum" starring Matthew McConaughey rounded out the Top 10 with a $1.8 million debut from 1,100 theaters, which is a career worst debut for the actor. The film received a mixed reception from critics (52% on Rotten Tomatoes and 56 on Metacritic) and audiences strongly disliked it (37% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes).
