As expected, Warner Bros' "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" topped the weekend box-office charts with impressive numbers, even though it wasn't quite the fantastic debut pundits were expecting. But "Beasts" isn't the only film that fell below expectations this weekend. Fellow new releases "Instant Family" and "Widows" also failed to impress.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
"Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald", the second in the Harry Potter spinoff series, opened with $62.2 million from 4,163 theaters, a strong debut despite falling short of the studio's anticipated $65 million. It's also $13 million less than what the first film grossed in its opening weekend two years ago, and pretty much the lowest debut in J.K. Rowling's so-called "Wizarding World" franchise.
However, let's not cry for Warner and Rowling just yet, as the film also brought in a total of $191 million from 79 overseas markets, breaking records in 18 of them. Of course, a problem might be that the film cost $200 million to produce, but even so, it's still a very lucrative franchise, so there's nothing to worry about in the long run, especially with the holidays so close.
"Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" received a mixed-to-negative critical reception (40% on Rotten Tomatoes and 53 on Metacritic) and even moviegoers weren't very impressed (71% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and "B+" on CinemaScore).
The animated holiday film "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch" dropped to second place with $38.1 million. The film only lost a modest 43% compared to last week, and its domestic total has reached $126.5 million after 10 days in theaters. It has also raked in a total of $25.2 million internationally from 23 countries.
In third place we find "Bohemian Rhapsody" with $15.7 million after a 49% drop. The film has grossed a total of $127.8 million domestically and another $256.4 million overseas against a $52 million budget.
Another new release, the dramedy "Instant Family" opened in fourth place with $14.7 million from 3,286 theaters, which is pretty much as expected, but definitely on the lower end of those expectations. The film cost around $48 million to produce, so if the film drops too fast in the coming weeks then recouping all that money is going to be hard. Still, there is hope as the film scored some high marks with both critics (81% on Rotten Tomatoes and a more conservative 58 on Metacritic) and audiences (86% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid "A" from CinemaScore).
The last of the new wide releases in the Top 10, and the movie rounding out the Top 5, the crime drama "Widows" also failed to live up to expectations. The film opened with $12.3 million from 2,803 theaters despite strong reviews from critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes and 86 on Metacritic). In fact the audience reception has been mostly lukewarm (67% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and "B" from CinemaScore). Internationally, the film has raked in $7.3 million from 18 markets. With production costs reported at around $42 million, turning a profit could prove a significant challenge.
New Wide Releases: "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald", "Instant Family", "Widows".
Biggest Drop : "The Girl in the Spider's Web" (-68%)
Smallest Drop : "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch" (-43.5%)
