The new wave of releases, which included the Neil Armstrong biopic "First Man" and the Halloween family adventure "Goosebumps 2", was not enough to take down "Venom" and "A Star is Born". Last week's #1 and #2 films continue to perform well, better than expected, actually, and dominate the box-office for a second consecutive weekend.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
Last week's #1 film, the comic book adaptation "Venom" starring Tom Hardy, is still on top this weekend. The film has grossed $35.7 million, a decent 55% drop for its second weekend, and its domestic tally has reached $142.8 million after just 10 days in theaters. Overseas, it has brought in $69.7 million from 54 markets for an international total of $235.3 million. The film still has more markets to add, including Japan and China. A release date for the latter has not been set, so far.
In second place it is followed at a much smaller distance than last week by "A Star is Born". The musical drama dropped just 35%, grossing $28 million in its second weekend. The film has grossed $94.1 million domestically after 10 days. Overseas it has grossed another $20 million for a $69.7 million international cume.
The first of the new releases, the biopic "First Man" which reunites "La La Land" team of director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling, opened with $16.5 million from 3.640 theaters against a $59 million budget. It's not a stellar debut, but it's okay considering that historical biopics don't necessarily earn big bucks. Internationally, the film has raked in $8.6 million from 22 markets. The critics were overjoyed with the film (88% on Rotten Tomatoes and 84 on Metacritic), but audiences seemed a little more reserved ("B+" from CinemaScore's audience polls).
Sony's fantasy film "Goosebumps 2" opened with $16.2 million in fourth place, a slight step back from the first film's $23.6 million debut in 2015. Overseas the film scored $3.7 million from 16 markets. On the plus side, the film's budget is almost half that of its predecessor, so the studio doesn't have much to worry about, although plans for a new sequel are probably on hold for now. Critics didn't think much of it (43% on Rotten Tomatoes and 54 on Metacritic), but moviegoers enjoyed it for the most part ("B" on CinemaScore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by the animated film "Smallfoot" with $9.3 million. The film is performing well and dropped just 35%. It has managed to gross a total of $57.6 million domestically and another $52.6 million overseas.
The last of the new wide releases, the neo-noir thriller "Bad Times at the El Royale" landed outside the Top 5 with an $8 million debut from 2,808 theaters. The movie fared well with the critics (71% on Rotten Tomatoes and 60 on Metacritic), but failed to impress moviegoers ("B-" on CinemaScore).
New Wide Releases: "First Man", "Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween", "Bad Times at the El Royale".
Biggest Drop : "A Simple Favor" (-59.7%)
Smallest Drop : "A Star is Born" (-34.7%)
