Expectations were high for Freddie Mercury biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" as the weekend started with a solid Friday performance, but the film managed to perform even better than expected and rocked the charts. Meanwhile, Disney's "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" struggled in its opening weekend, but Tyler Perry's "Nobody's Fool" made a decent debut.

Plagued by a troubled production, the biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" apparently did something right as the film scored a $50 million debut from 4,000 theaters. It also brought in $91.7 million overseas from 64 markets. The film received a mixed reception from critics (60% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic), but audiences seemed to really like it as CinemaScore reports an "A" grade from its opening night polls, and it currently holds a stellar 95% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In second place we find Disney's new fantasy adventure "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms", which opened with a weak $20 million against a $130 million budget. The film also grossed $38.5 million internationally from 45 countries. A $58.5 million global debut is actually pretty bad by Disney standards. It also doesn't help that both critics and audiences hated it. The film scored a 34% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 38 on Metacritic, from the critics, but a decent "B+" from CinemaScore. However, the 43% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes paints a pretty grim picture for the next weeks.
The last of the new wide releases, the comedy "Nobody's Fool" written and directed by Tyler Perry, opened in third place with $14 million against a $19 million budget. The R-rated film received poor reviews from critics (25% on Rotten Tomatoes and 39 on Metacritic), but audiences loved it as indicated by CinemaScore's "A-" grade. Rotten Tomatoes' Audience Score, however, at a low 44% seems to contradict CinemaScore's enthusiastic polling.
"A Star is Born" dropped from second to fourth place this weekend, grossing $11.1 million, which brings its domestic total to $165.6 million. The film only dropped 21% and continues to have solid prospects.
The horror sequel/reboot "Halloween" rounds out the Top 5 with $11 million after a pretty severe 64% drop. While the steep drop is a bit unexpected, the film has already delivered impressive figures with $150.4 million domestically and another $79.2 million overseas, against a $10 million budget.
