Weekend Box-Office: CRAZY RICH ASIANS Impresses; MILE 22 and ALPHA Struggle

The comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" topped the box-office charts over the weekend, scoring another consecutive hit for Warner Bros. Meanwhile, the other new releases, the action thriller "Mile 22", and the Ice Ace adventure flick "Alpha" both struggled.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"Crazy Rich Asians" scored a $25.2 million debut over the weekend, and a total of $34 million in the five days since its release on Wednesday. This is the first film featuring an all-Asian cast released by a major studio since the 1993 drama "The Joy Luck Club". Overseas, the film has opened in just six countries, bringing it $730,000, so far. "Crazy Rich Asians" has received a positive reception from both critics (92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 74 on Metacritic) and moviegoers ("A" on CinemaScore), which will most likely help the film keep the momentum going for the next few weeks. Pundits predict that the film will probably hit the $100 million milestone. Since the film has a modest $30 million budget and Warner spent around $11 million on advertising, it looks like a pretty healthy late summer success for the studio.

Warner Bros' second summer hit, the creature feature "The Meg", finished in second place with $21.1 million after an acceptable 53% second weekend drop. The film has grossed $84 million domestically, but it's overseas that the film is really impressing. The film has brought in $67 million from 55 countries and its international total has reached $230.4 million. As expected, China is its biggest contributor with $117.2 million.

In third place we find another new release, the action thriller "Mile 22" starring Mark Wahlberg. The film fell behind expectations with a $13.6 million debut from 3,520 theaters, which might just put a damper on preparations for the planned sequel. The film's saving grace is that it only cost $35 million to produce. The international markets will make or break this one. The film only opened in 6 countries this weekend, grossing $538,000. It will expand across the world throughout the rest of August and September. So far, China is not in the film's release calendar. "Mile 22" has received mostly negative reviews from critics (20% on Rotten Tomatoes and 40 on Metacritic) and audiences seem to confirm their verdict as CinemaScore reports a "B-" grade from its opening night polls.

Fourth and fifth places are being disputed by "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" and the new release "Alpha", which are both tied with $10.5 million. The sixth "Mission: Impossible" film has raked in $180.7 million domestically, and another $320.7 million overseas. The adventure film "Alpha" performed better than expected, but its $51 million budget makes this a less impressive debut. The film has received positive reviews from critics (84% on Rotten Tomatoes and 62 on Metacritic) and a decent "B+" grade from CinemaScore.
