"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" delivered the impressive debut everyone anticipated, and even exceeded expectations, but it's not quite the record-breaking opening of the first film in the reboot series.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
While everyone was anticipating that Universal and Amblin's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" would open with around $140 million, the film ultimately scored a $150 million debut. It's a step down from its 2015 predecessor, which opened with $208.8 million, but it's nevertheless impressive, especially as it had strong competition from "Incredibles 2". This is only the second time that two different films opened with over $100 million over two consecutive weekends. The others were "Shrek the Third" in 2007 with $121.6 million, followed the next weekend by "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" with $114.7 million.
Overseas, "Fallen Kingdom" has already brought in $561.5 million after 18 days in theaters. China is the film's best market, with a total of $202.6 million after 10 days. The film received mixed reivews from critics (50% on Rotten Tomatoes and 51 on Metacritic), but CinemaScore reports a solid "A-" grade from its opening night polls.
Disney and Pixar's "Incredibles 2" finished in second place with $80.9 million. The animated sequel dropped 55% compared to its opening weekend. Domestically it has grossed $350.3 million in 10 days, while internationally it has raked in $134.7 million. It is currently tenth in the all-time Top 10 of animated films, and the fourth largest Pixar release. "Incredibles 2" also managed to score Pixar's largest opening weekend in China ($21.2 million).
"Ocean's 8" is still going strong. The film dropped just 38% and grossed $11.6 million over the weekend for a third place finish. The film has topped $100 million domestically and brought in $70.6 million from international markets.
The R-rated comedy "Tag" dropped to #4 with $8.2 million after an okay 45% drop. The film has grossed $30.3 million, so far, which is a pretty decent for the $28 million production.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Deadpool 2" with $5.2 million. The film has crossed the $300 million mark domestically and topped $400 million overseas.
In sixth place, "Solo: A Star Wars Story" has finally managed to reach the $200 million milestone, grossing $4.5 million over the weekend.
A surprise entry in the Top 10 is the Mister Rogers documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor" which expanded into 348 additional theaters and grossed $1.8 million over the weekend, finishing in tenth place. The doumentary has grossed $4 million, so far.
