The giant shark vs. Jason Statham thriller "The Meg" won the weekend race at the box-office with surprisingly high numbers. Other new releases "Slender Man" and "Blackkklansman" performed according to expectations, delivering decent results. "Dog Days", however, failed to make the Top 10.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
"The Meg" is definitely this week's biggest surprise. The film was expected to open with around $20 million, but ended up finishing the weekend with $44.5 million from 4,118 theaters. This is Jason Statham's best opening weekend, not counting the ensemble "Fast & Furious" movies. It's also a hit overseas, grossing $97 million, of which $50 million were China's contribution, as the film was pretty much designed with China in mind. It's the best outcome for a co-production involving China since last year's Jackie Chan starrer "The Foreigner", a China-U.K. production. "The Meg" carries a budget of $130 million, so anything less than what it made this weekend would have been a disaster for Warner Bros, and there's still a long way before it breaks even. The film received mixed reviews from critics (48% on Rotten Tomatoes and 45 on Metacritic), and a decent "B+" grade from CinemaScore's opening night polls.
"Mission: Impossible - Fallout" continues its impressive performance, dropping just 43% and grossing $20 million over the weekend for a second place finish. The film has raked in $161.9 million domestically and $275.6 million overseas against a $178 million budget.
Disney's "Christopher Robin" finished its second weekend in third place with $12.4 million after a bearable 49% drop, bringing its domestic cume to $50 million, while overseas it has brought in a total of $12.1 million, against a $70 million budget.
In fourth place we have another new release, the horror film "Slender Man", which opened with $11.3 million from 2,357 theaters. While not spectacular, it's a solid result considering the film only cost $10 million to produce. Less encouraging is the fact that it received a unanimously negative response from both critics (14% on Rotten Tomatoes and 28 on Metacritic), and audiences ("D-" on CinemaScore).
Spike Lee's latest joint, the fact-based dramedy "Blackkklansman" rounds out the Top 5, scoring a decent $10.7 million debut from 1,512 theaters against a small $15 million budget. The film received high praise from critics (97% on Rotten Tomatoes and 82 on Metacritic), confirmed by audiences according to the "A-" CinemaScore grade.
The romantic comedy "Dog Days" opened on Wednesday, but even adding up all five days, it still wouldn't have made the Top 10. The film grossed $2.6 million over the weekend and $3.6 million in five days from 2,442 theaters. It received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics (60% on Rotten Tomatoes and 48 on Metacritic) and an "A-" from CinemaScore.
