"Mission: Impossible - Fallout", the sixth installment in the long-running action franchise has exploded in theaters over the weekend, topping the charts with the series' best three-day opening. Meanwhile, the animated film "Teen Titans Go! To the Movies" underperformed.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Mission: Impossible - Fallout" scored an estimated $61.5 million debut, a franchise best, and the second largest debut for star Tom Cruise, behind "War of the Worlds" ($64.8 million in 2005). As for the "M:I" franchise, the previous largest debut was the $57.8 million grossed by "Mission: Impossible II" in 2000. With a little inflation tinkering, that opening weekend amounts to about $99 million today, so it's still pretty impressive. "Fallout" also brought in an additional $92 million internationally from 36 markets, already an improvement on previous installments. The film received almost universal praise from critics (98% on Rotten Tomatoes and 86 on Metacritic), and CinemaScore reports an "A" grade from its opening night polls.

"Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" managed to surpass "The Equalizer 2" after the latter dominated the box-office last weekend, but it still had to settle for second place after dropping 57% from last week. The musical sequel grossed $15 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic tally to $70 million. Overseas the film has grossed $96.8 million, so far.

The action sequel "The Equalizer 2" also suffered a steep 61% drop from last week, grossing $14 million over the weekend and finishing in third place. No doubt, "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" was to blame for the huge drop. The film has grossed $64.2 million domestically and $6.1 million overseas.

At #4 we find "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" with $12.3 million. The film has reached a domestic total of $119.2 million and has brought in $165 million from international markets.

The other new wide release of the week, the DC Comics animated feature "Teen Titans Go! To The Movies", opened in fifth place with a disappointing $10.5 million. Still, since the film only cost $10 million to produce, it's not exactly a catastrophe. The film also brought in $1 million internationally after opening in only 8 markets. "Teen Titans Go! To The Movies" received mostly positive reviews from critics (90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 70 on Metacritic), and CinemScore reports a modest "B+".
