Everyone was expecting "Solo: A Star Wars Story" to break records at the Memorial Day holiday weekend box-office, but while the film managed to open in first place and made decent money, it failed to live up to the hype. Its overseas box-office was even worse.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Disney and Lucasfilm's "Solo: A Star Wars Story" grossed $83.3 million over the three-day weekend, and it's expected to bring in around $101 million for the four-day time frame. That's pretty low compared to Disney's initial $130-150 million projections for the four-day weekend. The film's budget is rumored to be somewhere around $250-300 million, without factoring in the marketing costs. The film also failed to make an impression overseas, where it opened with a lackluster $65 million from pretty much every possible major market available, minus Japan, where the film will be released on June 29th. Even its debut in China was a bust with a meager $10 million.
While the spinoff "Star Wars" films aren't expected to gross as much as the main series films, "Rogue One" proved capable of a $155 million debut and finished its run in theaters with $1 billion worldwide. From the looks of it "Solo" won't be able to come even remotely close to that mark.
"Solo: A Star Wars Story" received a mixed to positive reception from critics (70% on Rotten Tomatoes and 63 on Metacritic), and a solid "A-" from CinemaScore's opening night audience polls.
"Deadpool 2" dropped to #2 with $42.7 million over the three-day time frame, a pretty severe 66% drop from its opening weekend, and is expected to gross $53.5 million four the four-day weekend. The sequel has grossed $207.4 million domestically and $279.7 million internationally.
"Avengers: Infinity War" finished in third place with $17 million for the regular weekend, and is expected to end up with 21 million for the extended weekend. The film has grossed $621.6 million domestically, ranking it sixth in the all-time domestic chart, while overseas it has raked in $1.2 billion, making it the fourth largest global release of all-time.
In fourth place we find the comedy "Book Club" with $9.4 million for the weekend and an estimated $12 million for the full holiday time frame. The film's domestic gross has topped $30 million, trippling its budget.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the Melissa McCarthy comedy "Life of the Party" with $5.1 million for the three-day weekend and an expected $6.5 million for the four-day time frame. The film has grossed close to $40 million against a $30 million budget.
