"Ocean's 8" stole the top spot from Disney and Lucasfilm's "Solo", and delivered a pretty strong opening. Another new release, the horror "Hereditary" outperformed expectations, while "Hotel Artemis" struggled to find an audience.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
The "Ocean's" trilogy spinoff "Ocean's 8" topped the charts with a $41.5 million opening weekend. The film also brought in $12.2 million overseas from 16 countries. It's a very good start for the film, which reportedly cost around $70 million to produce. "Ocean's 8" scored mixed-to-positive reviews from critics (68% on Rotten Tomatoes and 61 on Metacritic), while CinemaScore reports an okay "B+" from its opening night polls.
"Solo: A Star Wars Story" dropped to second place with $15.1 million. That's another steep 48.5% drop from last weekend. The international situation isn't any better with just $11.3 million. Its domestic total now stands at $176.1 million, while its international tally has reached $136.1 million. The film's production costs are estimated at around $200 million, without taking the marketing costs into consideration.
In third place we have "Deadpool 2" with $13.6 million. The sequel has grossed $278.6 million domestically, and another $376.5 million overseas, against a $110 million budget.
The newly released horror film "Hereditary" scored a surprising $13 million debut, finishing in fourth place. This is the largest opening for an A24 film, and the studio's widest release (2,964 theaters). It also broke even, recuperating its $10 million budget in a single weekend. "Hereditary" received glowing reviews from critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes and 87 on Metacritic), but CinemaScore reports a dismal "D+" grade from its audience polling.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Avengers: Infinity War" with $6.8 million. The nineteenth installment in the Marvel franchise has topped $650 million domestically and it's close to crossing the $2 billion milestone very soon.
The last of the new wide releases, the neo-noir action thriller "Hotel Artemis" fell behind with a weak $3.1 million debut from 2,407 theaters, finishing in eighth place. The film only cost $15 million to produce, but even with such a small budget, its prospects aren't looking good. "Hotel Artemis" received mixed reviews from critics (58% from Rotten Tomatoes and 57 on Metacritic), while CinemaScore reports an unenthusiastic "C-" grade.
