Sony's threequel "Hotel Transylvania 3" confirmed the animated franchise's viability as it topped the weekend box-office, knocking the "Ant-Man" sequel from the top spot. Meanwhile, the new Dwayne Johnson starrer "Skyscraper" struggled in its opening weekend.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" opened in first place with $44.1 million. The film has grossed a total of $45.3 million domestically, including the June 30 Amazon Prime showings, which amounted to $1.27 million. The $44.1 million three-day debut ranks second in the series, besting the first film's $42.5 million debut in 2012, but falling short of the $48.5 million grossed by the second installment in 2015. "Hotel Transylvania 3" also brought in $54.8 million overseas. It's even more profitable if we consider the modest $80 million budget. The film received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics (60% on Rotten Tomatoes and 54 on Metacritic), but CinemaScore reports a solid "A-" from its opening night polls.

Marvel's "Ant-Man and the Wasp" took a step back and landed at #2  with $28.8 million. The film dropped more than 60% in its second weekend, which is the largest second weekend drop for a Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel. The film has grossed $132.8 million domestically after 10 days and another $150.9 million overseas.

In third place we have the Dwayne Johnson action thriller "Skyscraper" with a $25.4 million debut. This is well below Universal's $30 million projections. As for Johnson, this opening weekend is better than the $18 million debut of "Baywatch", but it ranks 17th among the actor's entire body of work. The film scored another $40.4 million overseas from 57 international markets. China, which should be its main international target, will follow next weekend along with 10 additional markets. "Skyscraper" received mixed reviews from critics (51% on Rotten Tomatoes and 52 on Metacritic), and a decent "B+" grade from CinemaScore.

Disney and Pixar's "Incredibles 2" finished in fourth place with $16.2 million. The animated sequel has grossed a total of $535.8 million domestically and another $321.1 million overseas.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" with $15.5 million, bringing its domestic cume to $363.3 million, while internationally it has raked in $771.4 million.

In other news, the sci-fi comedy "Sorry to Bother You" expanded into 805 additional theaters and finished in seventh place with $4.2 million.
